A Freestyle Sorta Christmas

16/12/2009

[via TAANS]

One of my best friends (and favorite producer/turntablist) Woof the Phonocator gave me Judy Torres’ “Come Into My Arms” on wax for Christmas! [NOTE: I posted it up a while back] Included on the vinyl is a House remix (”The Casa Mix”) that I’ve been salivating over for some time now. I searched the inner and outer web to no avail. No one I know had a digital version, let alone the original vinyl. Woof found out; looked through his enormous vinyl collection; and guess what? HE HAD 2 COPIES! ….and Now I Have one of them! THANK YOU Josh!

Judy Torres – Come Into My Arms (The Casa Mix) 1987

I was brought up on my sister’s homemade Freestyle tapes and bootleg CDs. Growing up in Jamaica, Queens had a soundtrack provided by: Stevie B, Judy Torres, TKA, Debbie Deb, Coro, C-Bank, Cynthia, Noel, and the list goes on.

Mention “Freestyle” anywhere outside of New York, Florida and/or Miami and nine times out of ten you’ll receive a blank stare or a reference to hip-hop freestyling (”off the top of the dome”). Now mention “Freestyle” around my Dj partner in crime Alain D. and be ready for stories of growing up in Brooklyn and critiques on “kids these days”. We’re doing an old school house/freestyle/breaks party soon (he doesn’t even know it yet)…so be ready.

Relevant Tunes

Giggles – Love Letters
C.Bank – I Won’t Stop Loving You [One of my favorites OF ALL TIME; Wait for the horns.]
Cynthia – Change On Me [Extended Mix]

XANADU

11/12/2009

Okay, I gotta say that this whole trip started because I was trying to find a lossless version of “All Over The World” by Electric Light Orchestra.  Turns out that the only way I got it was through downloading the entire Xanadu soundtrack, which is completely fine by me, seeing as how it’s one of my favorite films/musicals of all time.

Now, if you do not know about XANADU…I’m really not sure what to say except, my condolensces.  Please do yourself a favor and check out this epic (albeit, campy) film!  Do not get it twisted with the big pharm XANAX…(har har)…okay, but really, bad jokes aside, DO IT!  Olivia Newton-John in her prime, ELO doing most of the score, music, dancing, rollerskates, glitterati, forays into cartoon acid trip land…jesus, what’s not to like about all that?!!?

It’s got the best of the residual disco days and the early 80’s aerobic/neon madness (American Apparel’s design department probably plays this shit on repeat for inspiration), all wonderfully marinated and stewed into a psychedelic delight.  Bon appetit!
