Nieves is an independent publishing house based in Zurich, Switzerland. Their operation is simple and pretty amazing and they focus on publishing limited Artists’ Books and Zines.
A company like this is something I’ve always aspired to create. With everyone around me either currently working on personal art projects from music to photography or recently have created a shit load of dope art, It would be amazing to set up shop and bring it to the masses off the internet. They say Print Media is dying, and in some shape way or form they are correct but Nieves shows that it’s still alive and not going anywhere anytime soon. Via their website you can preview the books as well which serves as a great tool for inspiration. Their books are also priced extremely well so if something hits your eye, its not a dent in your pocket (unless you’re me and everything seems to be striking). Happy browsing.

Visual Economics

I love that in this world even the most serious topics can be dealt with creatively. As a graduate with a degree inEconometrics & Monetary Policy I fell victim to the boring and lack of creative environment for 5 years of my life. When I found this website, I was pleasantly surprised. Visual Economics is a great source for information regarding the worlds most difficult questions regarding economics. Explaining these topics in essays is extremely difficult to comprehend as well as time consuming. Who has the time? As a design enthusiast, they have found a common ground. Their well designed flow charts and graphs really break down economic policy and puts it in the simplest terms. It’s important to note that these graphs do not answer the “Why?” factor but solely display the results of the analysis conducted.

A Year in Flyers with Alain D.

The idea to take all the flyers I’ve designed over the year came to me earlier in the week. I view my design the same way as my DJ sets… a form of expression. I used to always try to make my flyers “FUN & Quirky” but I’ve failed design after design, so I decided to just make something that defined me. I try my hardest to incorporate many different aspects of design especially Typography, Color Matching, & Composition.

After a year of some really great parties with some really great friends, these have been my favorites yet (in no specific order)

My 100 Cardboards

Amazing may not be the word to describe Berni Valenta’s work. Valenta is based out of Munich, Germany and his skills are based out of a place I have not yet been. What’s fantastic is the simplicity of his work. A cardboard box, Sharpie Marker Set, and a hand.

My 100 Cardboards was put out in May and has been getting hits on the internet since.

Facelift

Every Wednesday the contributors of Shruglife get together to talk about the things that happened over the past week, things that are going to happen in the current week, and the things we’d like to see happen in the following weeks to come.

At 1AM there were only a few of us left standing. TAANS, DJ Scallywag, and myself. Topic drastically changed and we ended up speaking about the internet and society. In detail, we discussed how as time passes and the internet grows, we all (in general) must be more careful with how we use the internet. We came to an agreement that we all must be conscious of how we are being portrayed in the online world.

It’s not like the 3 of us have anything to hide from the public eye, but just the thought that all the information on the internet is never actually deleted but just archived is insane. 10 years from now any person with the proper credentials can pull up your online history with the click of a button. Why add to this?

People have lost careers, loved-ones, and even worse over information that they thought was in their past but has come to re-visit them. I; of course am writing this with the assumption that all this “past information” is 100% legal, maybe just; a bit….tasteless and/or… stupid. Facebook (of course) was an actual example we were using and we all came to the agreement (by ourselves at separate times) that we would be taking steps back from the technology and reverting to more traditional ways of communication.

In the end, The fact that anyone can get a photo of you and just put it up for all to see has become a bit too much for the three of us to handle. So in the New Year, you may be receiving a few extra phone calls from your buddies at Shruglife and fewer Facebook Chat Requests. We didn’t even get into the fact that our phone conversations can be pulled up at anytime… We had to compromise somewhere and just give up.

So, why am I writing this. Anyone who really knows me, knows I am a sucker for good design, typography, and all things with a minimalistic feel. Crawling through the internet I stumbled upon this design project by Barton Smith called Facebook Facelift. After looking at his Facelift of Facebook’s website (that’s not going to happen) I was immediately drawn and said to myself… “If Facebook looks like this, I’d never leave it”. Going against everything that I said above. So Facebook, If you want to continue having me as a customer (not that you need me) follow Barton’s vision and you may add to your hefty 350 million active viewers.
