Sup Shruggers. Finally got this mixtape finished after milling over it for the past couple months. Hopefully this will be the start of some kind of heavy outflux of  material – I have like 8 mixes in my head right now that I need to get off my chest, and I know I always say it, but I intend to get prolific. Pretty sure this mix will be the most in-depth one for awhile though.

So yeah, all kinds of advanced wave patterning inside this one. It’s based around all these new ideas that have been rippling out of the hardcore continuum over the last year or so, stuff that I can’t help but follow closely, seeing as how the broader sound seems to mutate just about every other month or so.  It’s pretty tough to burn out on something that moves this quick, especially when the inertia pulls in all these talented people who then inform the larger concept and add another sub-set of influences. Even though it’s harder to find the appropriate venues to play this stuff out (at least in the US), I feel like following it all is, at the very least, an amazing way to aggregate across multiple genres. Plus you eventually get this condensed sense of how it’s all evolving in real-time, which just adds another layer to the addiction for me.

But yeah, in general, it’s centered around the moodier strains of what’s been spidering out of dubstep’s wake, along with a couple other genres I’ve pulled in for effect. Part of the reason I made this is just to corral as much of it as possible for those who are unfamiliar, but the bigger focus in this for me was to really draw out the emotional weight inherent in a lot of these tracks…as far as that goes, all I will say is that I put a lot of thought into sequencing and mixing this.

Anyhow, it clocks in at around 1:40, super lengthy for a mix these days, I know, but I was trying to go wide-screen with this one. If you liked The Distant Haunts, it has a pretty similar arc and mood. Things really start to come together around the 40 minute mark, so let it run awhile if you want to see the whole vibe I’m getting at start to…make sense?

….annnd, just cause I’ve clogged your dashboard up already, might as well mention that you can get most of my mixes easily by subscribing to my podcast. All different genres, plus I just realized there’s a mix in there from a few months ago that I never posted here.

Oh…and lastly… if could you do me one small favor, please:

listen to this at night.

Thanks….

Greeteengs to youuuuu!

Eet ees zee time off tideengs off which I am breenging monthly, zee tideengs zat breeng een zee rush off zee neu wave! Hopefully U know now off wheech I speak, for eet ees most assuredly hour favoreet meednight deesko exposé.

However, I unfortunately haff to be zee beholder off some bad nyoos zeese time, as my partner een zeese endeavois, zee one Adonis Jackson, will bee indisposedible zeese time around; He ees busy making veiny-glorious art sculptings for extravagant PPL who actually live as laveeshly as I do preetend to sound een my head (well u know, at least when I ham typing zeese intervites for you).

BUT EET EES NO MATTER, for I haff recruited one off mein dearest compatriotes from hour shruglife collecteeve een his stead, none other zan zee one DJ ARQ heemself! Also a masterful selector and bon vivant, hour combined presence will guarantee towards you a carousal off proportions unbeknownst!

SO COME! and may zee strong leequids off K&M combine weese stronger flames off passion to fuel an evening off wheech your dreams can only aspire to be!

The eeneemitable Gary Numan looking rather hard-boiled een these video, no? But of course, eenstead off a classique film noir backdrop, wee haff zee tried and true laser grid, not to mention some of zee chunkiest keytars i haff ever seen!

but off course, not everything ees italo disco and puppy dog tails. We haff been known to get darker and darker wees each passing party, so do not be surprised iff we start lashing out at zee sunbeams

Till tomorrow!

Ahh zee Beeg Apple…zee theekness of zee summer aire ees so demanding, eet ees as eef hour bodies geeve us no choice but to submit to nightlife, no?

But of course because you are now already knowing: zee steeky weends and nightly moistures are off no regard when Adonis Jackson and Scallywag are playing zee records we hold so dear. And wees theese two at zee helm, eet ees for certain that we haff boarded a cruiseship off zee mind, one zat ees forever steeped een luxury. Barbados…St. Tropez…. every song a voyage, every note like drops off champagne een zee sunset.

And so we must go, enlivened by zee radiance off solsteece, so zat zee long light can pour out from hour hearts and onto zee dancefloor, eellumeenating our movements for all to see…

Scallywag’s Top Ten Albums Q2 2010

24/06/2010

trickle

See that Q2 up there? Makes it look like I got some sorta system involved with these lists huh now. A quarterly system even – just like all them multi-nationals and universities and what have you. Yep, preeettty fancy.

Anyhow, don’t think I ever Q1′d it tho. In fact, I made this list like a month ago, and this post has just been sitting there in the drafts even though I thought I posted it. Actually have heard about another solid 10er in the past month alone, which is kinda nuts given that this one spans about 6, so get ready for Q3 soon! or maybe like Q2.5…or the lost Q….type Q negative… anyhow…

10.The Village Orchestra – I Can Hear the Sirens Singing Again
9.Loscil – Endless Falls
8.Alex Smoke – Lux
7.James Pants – Seven Seals
6.Ratatat – LP4
5.Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma
4.Tigersushi presents More GDM X
3.Ablehearts- Flood
2.Caribou – Swim
1.Javelin – No Mas

so yeah, couple obvious ones, but check out Village Orchestra or Loscil if you like ambient stuff, Alex Smoke if you like heady techno, James Pants of the Tigersushi comp if you like post-punk/lo-fi/weird stuff/the occult, Ablehearts for some damaged beauty, and check out the Javelin album just cuz….it’s got a lot of good jams.

Hey, here you go…some toobs to facilitate the process.

Until next time…

which should be really soon cause I have to do another post now, that’s why I’m here actually ::cough::…..

so yeah…see you in a post  (that post…. ^^ the one up there ^^ …..that’s where i’ll be, y’know, just……waiting)

Ohh! Oh my! Come now, make haste to your weendow! A foundation of porcelain forms een silence, and zee whorled ees blanketed anew! As we watch zee majesty of nature descending slowly from zee sky, freegid as eet ees beeyootiful, we often wonder aloud to hourselves: how ees eet that we too can purify hour sensibilities??

And then, like a snowflake creestallising eenside off hour minds, we recall with glee: Ah! eet ees almost time once aigain, time for Brooklyn’s premiere evening at zee discotheque! And we are knowing then for certain zat Adonis Jackson and Scallywag will play hour musik… zee musique which brings us theese feeling off rebirth within!

Zee Legendary Diana Ross most certainly knew how to confront zee cold with fearless abandon! Fanged creatures off zee ice are but off no match for a diva of theese magnitude!

And we mustn’t not forget off Freeez! For their chilly namesake gives way to a bounty of crazy hot steps and fiery rhythms! Wees keytars theese heavy, you can not barely weestand zee urges you haff to burst wees sweat!

So eet ees settled. Een but merely two days, we will go boldly een to zee white off night, laughing at zee cold as we pay no mind! Instead, we shall heat the dancefloor as we twirl een deelite, igniting zee midnite fellowship wees zee fires eenside off hour hearts!

RIP Teddy Pendergrass

15/01/2010

teddy

Goddamn, that man could sing. This is EASILY one of my favorite songs of all-time – any era, any genre. The Thelma Houston version was a bigger hit apparently, but the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes version is just untouchable: so huge and uplifting, yet filled with heartbreak.

Rest easy, Teddy, and thank you for the music.

BONUS: Extended Tom Moulton version + killer edit of “The Love I Lost” . Do the world a favor and play one of these at the end of the night this weekend.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – Don’t Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton Mix)
