Recently, the UK government passed The Digital Economy Act which included many, perhaps draconian, measures to combat online music piracy (including withdrawing broadband access for persistent pirates).
Much was proclaimed about how these new laws would protect musicians and artists revenue and livelihoods.
But how much money do musicians really get paid in this new digital marketplace?”
”
“Even with the relatively healthy profits from CDs (a fast-fading format), a musician has to sell hundreds, month after month, to make a living. I think it’s just a reality there are more people who want to be musicians than the market can support, even (especially?) in the digital age. That doesn’t mean aspiring Jack Johnsons or Thom Yorkes can’t make music. It’s just that lots of them are going to have to do it for love, not money.”
A few weeks ago the crew organized a massive 20 head BYOB & Food Karaoke night in K-Town. Although we missed a few members of the crew: Four Loco, Beer, Champagne, and Asian Snacks helped fill the gap. We also sang stronger in their honor.
If we weren’t already attached to the hip, This brought us even closer (especially DJ Scallywag who sang his heart out to each and every soul in that room). The 1st of many Karaoke sessions was well documented by our home-girl Chrissy and I know with the weather getting warmer we’re sure to be running through town even more The Karaoke night ended with me singing “A whole new world” and I really think I touched some hearts.
I sort have been slacking on finding new music these days that’s not Electro or POP. Stumbling upon Darwin Deez changed that a bit. Darwin Deez music is young and dope as hell. It’s simple, catchy, and just sounds good. I’m not good at reviewing music so just take a listen and enjoy!
Nieves is an independent publishing house based in Zurich, Switzerland. Their operation is simple and pretty amazing and they focus on publishing limited Artists’ Books and Zines.
A company like this is something I’ve always aspired to create. With everyone around me either currently working on personal art projects from music to photography or recently have created a shit load of dope art, It would be amazing to set up shop and bring it to the masses off the internet. They say Print Media is dying, and in some shape way or form they are correct but Nieves shows that it’s still alive and not going anywhere anytime soon. Via their website you can preview the books as well which serves as a great tool for inspiration. Their books are also priced extremely well so if something hits your eye, its not a dent in your pocket (unless you’re me and everything seems to be striking). Happy browsing.
As you probably can tell our logo has changed. I made this by accident but it ended up coming out really good and the whole crew decided it should stick. What do you think?
We’re also in the process of making them into buttons! Would you rock one?
With Shruglife’s DJ ARQ & FULLTIMEFUN packing out the lower east side for a weeknight worth spending out. We’ve teamed up with Danceswithwhitegirls and photographer The Culture of me to bring everyone together to celebrate clean mixing and tasteful selection.
This week they’ve invited the Queen of the crew K!O & The Dapperest Alain D. who has been doing all our flyer design.
Let loose and come thru on Tuesdays to be part of something truly special. We guarantee it.
Pendulum produce some serious trip beats. Its a mix of the Gorillaz meets Radiohead with a splash of The Faint (I hope my descriptions does them justice cause they rock)
I ain’t mad at this at all! This video is serious.
“In a time when everyone who isn’t Crookers is claiming to be a “disco act”, there is an insurmountable wash of pretenders. Adelaide trio The Swiss, however, are a legit live disco band who’s existence is based on entirely on flavour and good times rather than the Cobra Snake and fitted caps.” -ModPeople
